Will Earth be saved or enslaved!?
In 1934, artist Alex Raymond, created THE AMAZING INTERPLANETARY ADVENTURES OF FLASH GORDON as a weekly Sunday comic strip inspired by and to compete with the already popular BUCK RODGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY series. Together, these two comics brought the idea of space exploration into popular media, following Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Both strips became epic sagas filled with strange creatures, intriguing landscapes, futuristic cities and machinery and highly imaginative science fiction.
The iconic FLASH GORDON was soon adapted for radio in 1935 and broadcast weekly on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Our Live Radio performance is based on the first four episodes from the original “space adventure drama” series.
A mysterious celestial object suddenly appears from the depths of outer space and appears to be on a collision course with Earth! The arrival of this strange planet of doom in our solar system threatens humanity and wreaks havoc around the globe by bombarding it with fiery meteors!
One of these spouting fireballs hits a transcontinental plane whose passengers include the “World-renowned polo player, all around athlete and Yale graduate” Flash Gordon and his companion, the lovely Dale Arden. After a failed attempt to fly the damaged airplane, they manage to parachute safely to the ground, landing near the laboratory of the infamous scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov.
Crazed from his non-stop efforts to save the Earth, Dr. Zarkov captures Flash and Dale and forces them into his rocket ship on a suicide mission to crash it into the approaching comet – which turns out to be the planet Mongo. They discover that the meteors showering the Earth, were actually weapons of mass destruction being fired by Ming the Merciless, the Evil Emperor of Mongo whose ultimate goal is to enslave the peoples of the entire universe!
Now united against a common enemy, Flash, Dale and Dr. Zarkov, travel around Mongo, where they have many adventures. Seeking to defeat Ming the Mercileess, they befriend the diverse tribes of the planet, including Prince Vultan of the Hawk Men, Prince Thun of the Lion Men, Princess Fria of the Icy land of Frigia, and Prince Barin of Arbora, the forest kingdom.
