ALL IN THE TIMING by David Ives

Theatre that aerobicizes the brain and tickles the heart.

David Ives’ ALL IN THE TIMING is a critically acclaimed, award-winning evening of quirky comedies that combine wit, intellect, satire and just plain fun. These six highly diverse but equally hysterical playlets are unlike any program of one-acts you’ve ever seen and make for an entertaining evening of theatre at its most unique.

The world according to David Ives is a very odd place, and his plays constitute a virtual stress test of the English language — and of the audience’s capacity for disorientation and delight. Ives’s characters plunge into black holes called “Philadelphias,” where the simplest desires are hilariously thwarted. Chimps named Milton, Swift, and Kafka are locked in a room and made to re-create Hamlet. And a con man peddles courses in a dubious language in which “hello” translates as “velcro” and “fraud” comes out as “freud.”

“Like sketches for some hilarious, celestially conceived revue. The writing is not only very funny, it has density of thought and precision of poetry…ALL IN THE TIMING is by a master of fun. David Ives spins hilarity out of words.” —The New York Times.

David Ives is an American playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. He is best known for his comic one-act plays and often referred to as the “maestro of the short form“. He has also written dramatic plays, narrative stories, and screenplays.

Ives was bitten by the theatre bug early in life and wrote his first play when he was nine years old. While attending a boy’s Catholic seminary he acted and sang in a school show called THE SENIOR MOCK, where the students satirized the teachers. Ives attended Northwestern University, majoring in English. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. He traveled to Germany, where he taught English and graduated from the Yale School of Drama with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1984.

ALL IN THE TIMING premiered in 1993, won several playwriting awards and was the most performed play in the USA… after stage classics by William Shakespeare.
