British play on Marilyn Monroe Opens in March

Monroe as we have never seen her before: alone in her bedroom in a dressing gown and underwear; no glitz, no glamour, no masks. Overdosed on pills, the woman behind the icon unravels her remarkable life and bares all, revealing a biting intelligence, a frustrated talent and an imperfect body. New English American Theatre (Neat) is thrilled to introduce German audiences to THE UNREMARKABLE DEATH OF MARILYN MONROE. The play opens March 31 at Theater am Olgaeck.  The show will also be part of the American Days in Stuttgart this year.

“This play might at first glance be about Marilyn Monroe but, really it’s a play about love and the events in our lives that make us who we are”, says playwright Elton Townend Jones about his show. Townend Jones is no stranger to Stuttgart audiences. Neat produced his comedy THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE last Summer.

The text of the Marilyn play is incredibly accurate“, says director Charles C. Urban. Those unfamiliar with Monroe’s private life would discover interesting truths about her marriages to Joe Dimaggio, Arthur Miller career, her relationships with Yves Montand, Laurence Olivier, Billy Wilder, Tony Curtis, Clark Gable, Julius Henry “Groucho” Marx  as well as her affairs with the Kennedy brothers. “Having had the pleasure of directing Townend Jones’s adaptation of Mark Twain’s THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE, I was very anxious to read the author’s newest published play”, Urban says. The director applied for the performance rights the day it had become available. “This is the German Premiere of the play!” , exclaims Urban.

The combination of Townend Jones’s powerful writing, the story of America’s most recognizable and misunderstood idols, and the talent of actress Hana Kim would make this project an enlightening and highly entertaining evening of theatre, promises Urban. Kim has been featured in several Neat projects before, including GOD OF CARNAGE, THE AWFUL GERMAN LANGUAGE or SORRY, WRONG NUMBER. “This is Kim’s first starring role and she gives a magnificent interpretation and performance of the complex character of Norma Jean Mortenson aka Marilyn Monroe, or as the Hollywood idol refers to herself ‘Noodle’!”, Urban says.
