How Did the Elephant Get his Trunk?
If you’ve ever wondered how the Elephant got its trunk, how the Rhinoceros got its skin, how the Kangaroo got its powerful legs, or why the Camel has a hump; we’ll explain it all to you next Thursday!
Rudyard Kipling, one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom in both prose and verse has supplied us with the answers to the above questions in his short story collection JUST SO STORIES!
Kipling loved to entertain his own children and those of his friends by inventing ingenious explanations describing how each animal acquired its most distinctive features and how each animal was modified from an original form to its current form by the acts of man, some magical being, or a certain circumstance. The JUST SO STORIES actually began as bedtime stories told to his first born daughter Josephine; these had to be told “just so” (exactly in the words she was used to) or she would wake up and put back the missing sentence.
JUST SO STORIES by Rudyard Kipling features
