As a follow up to our successful Cole Porter project, LYRICALLY SPEAKING, this current show is dedicated to the Lyrics & Poetry of Tom Lehrer. Good songwriting can stand entirely on its own, so our ensemble will be performing a wide selection of Lehrer’s text in a unique poetic fashion. Of course, there will be singing too!
A Harvard mathematics instructor by day and musical satirist by night, Tom Lehrer was one of the sharpest wits of the 1950s and ‘60s who wrote, sang and performed blackly comic songs lampooning social norms, musical genres and the headlines of the day. His best work is characterized by an aggressive blitheness — singing about something ghastly with a joyeux de vivre about the horrors being perpetrated – as in his most famous song POISONING PIGEONS IN THE PARK.
Tom Lehrer, who turned 95 this year on April 9, has been called the J.D. Salinger of Demented Songwriting. This reclusive personality retired from a successful music career in 1967, when he was 39 years old, and devoted himself to teaching mathematics at Harvard University.
In November 2022, the generous Mr. Lehrer formally relinquished the copyright and performing / recording rights on his songs, making all music and lyrics composed by him Public Domain and free for anyone to use.
