NEAT <\/strong>is proud to present another Live Radio Play <\/strong>in our ongoing series honoring the Golden Era of Radio. Director David Burmedi <\/strong>writes the following about his latest theatre project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casablanca.<\/strong><\/em>  My love affair with Hollywood movies goes way back, and if I were ever going to stage one, <\/em>Casablanca<\/em> was always near the top of the list.  There are really so many Hollywood movies to choose from.  And they all have universal appeal.  But in terms of script-genius, it is hard to top <\/em>Casablanca<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it.<\/strong><\/em>  <\/em>I was determined to retain the radio show format that worked so successfully for our production of <\/em>It\u2019s A Wonderful Life.<\/em>  Live sound effects, a must.  Throw in a couple of humorous radio advertisements to carry us back in time.  And of course, plug in the electronic Applause sign.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s new this time around?<\/strong><\/em>  You get a table at Rick\u2019s American Caf\u00e9.  You step into the film.  You sip your drink and watch the action unfold.  Sam plays his piano at your elbow, and the backdrop is a blow up from the original Hollywood film set.  What could be cooler than that?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It begins as a radio show and ends as a film.  You start as a passive observer, but by the time you sing along to <\/em>Knock on Wood<\/em>, you begin the slow inevitable slide into celluloid.  And by the end, you\u2019re feeling the heat and desperation of this fabled city in Morocco. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But bringing a film to the stage has its own particular challenges.<\/strong><\/em>  You can\u2019t have everything.  The elements that make <\/em>Casablanca<\/em> one of the greatest films of all time \u2013 in particular, the cinematography and the music \u2013 cannot be reproduced live.  We can\u2019t film through gauze to make Ilsa\u2019s complexion flawless, or have an orchestra play the <\/em>Marseillaise <\/em>and triumph over the <\/em>Watch on the Rhine. <\/em> Creating artillery fire on stage would just piss off the neighbors, wouldn\u2019t it?  So what <\/em>can<\/em> we do? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, it\u2019s all about the writing.<\/strong><\/em>  A big story, about taking sides, and doing the right thing.  About being torn between love and duty.  About casting aside cynicism in a world that is falling apart and returning to the ideals you once held.  That\u2019s Rick\u2019s story, but there are no small roles in <\/em>Casablanca.<\/em>  Every character embarks on their own journey and some end up very far from where they began.  Which is why we gave the actors in our \u201cradio studio\u201d the right look \u2013 Rick in his white dinner jacket and bow tie, a fez for Ferrari, a smart French policeman\u2019s uniform for Renault.  Because we <\/em>know<\/em> these characters \u2013 they are the stuff of Hollywood legend \u2013 and rightly so.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
