<\/em><\/p>\nThis is the Seventh Installment in our popular Live Radio Play Series and director, David Burmedi,\u00a0 strives to stage it with the maximum of authenticity.<\/p>\n
NEAT<\/strong>: David, what is your special relationship to IT\u2019S A WONDERFUL LIFE?<\/em><\/p>\n David Burmedi: <\/strong>It\u2019s A Wonderful Life <\/em>was the last play I performed at the Roadside Theater in Heidelberg.\u00a0 It was a radio play \u2013 we had the scripts right there in our hands (?!) \u2013 and we could dive into the character work without fear of dropping a single line.\u00a0 And what characters!\u00a0 I played Clarence, nickel-plated angel, sent to Earth to save a man from killing himself.\u00a0 I played wicked old Potter and the affable, n\u2019er-do-well Uncle Billy.\u00a0 My daughter who was 17 years old at the time and produced sound effects live onstage, did my make-up every night.\u00a0 She did it early, because it took me about a half hour afterwards to tie that bowtie.<\/p>\n In a fundamental way, this play transformed my thinking about the theater<\/strong>.\u00a0 A well-written radio play \u2013 to my mind \u2013 is a consummate form of entertainment.\u00a0 The studio set carries the audience back to a time that most of us remember fondly.\u00a0 The actors, in classic attire, feel like Hollywood stars as soon as they hit the stage.\u00a0 And when the \u201cON AIR\u201d light starts blinking, the audience is on the edge of their seats before the story even begins.<\/p>\n And the stories from yesteryear!<\/strong>\u00a0 As those of us who predate YouTube know, a story told around the campfire, or read from a book, engages its audience the way that the visual media can\u2019t.\u00a0 It draws in the listener and forces him or her to partake in a flight of imagination.\u00a0 It\u2019s a journey of their own<\/em> making.\u00a0 Nothing pre-fabricated, no painting by the numbers, not my way or the highway.\u00a0 This is the real deal.\u00a0 This is your<\/em> story as much as it is mine, because a story needs a listener as much as a teller.<\/p>\n Producing live sound effects is like putting on a magic show.<\/strong>\u00a0 And like most magic tricks, once you see how they\u2019re done, you cannot believe how simple it is.\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what a Foley Artist does:\u00a0 he takes you behind the scenes and shows you how audio-magic done.\u00a0 And with such flair, that you soon realize you\u2019re getting 2 shows for the price of 1!<\/p>\n And finally, radio shows are unbridled joy for the character actor<\/strong>.\u00a0 Stories told on the radio were notorious for indulging any number of colorful characters \u2013 and why not?\u00a0 On the radio, the action is not restrained by change in costume or set.\u00a0 Anything goes.\u00a0 Find an actor with the versatility to shine in multiple roles, to change from a man to a child in the space of a breath, and you\u2019ll teach the audience a lesson in vocal acrobatics.\u00a0 It is a small miracle that will send them home saying, \u201cNow that\u2019s<\/em> theater!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Relive the Golden Era of Radio with this Holiday Favorite!
