The ONE PAGE PLAY FESTIVAL is a collaboration between the WiS – WRITERS IN STUTTGART and NEAT – NEW ENGLISH AMERICAN THEATRE

Director and Initiator, David Burmedi, Explains the Concept –

“Producing the One Page Play Festival has been a journey.  It began about a year ago, at a writer’s workshop in Rheinland Pfalz.  The intent was to write, rehearse and produce plays in one weekend.  Gotta be a joke, right? 

 Not at all.  Creating a piece of theater in no time can be a liberating experience.  When you think about it, a one-page play is the ultimate low investment, high pay off creative strategy.  Easy to get off the ground.  Gives the writer license to try anything.  Affords an unbeatable variety of styles and genres.  Seriously, what’s not to love? 

 Then an even better idea came along.  What if we leveraged writers who actually have experience writing plays and other performance pieces?  What if we gave them a couple of months to conceive and draft their plays?  And what if we held real auditions to find character actors with the versatility you need to pull something like this off?

 A small series of miracles was set in motion.  And all of our hopes and dreams came true.

 Yes, they can be written.  In fact, we collected 58 submissions to the festival.

 Yes, they are good.  The jury was floored by the talent.  Some of the material was heart-stopping.  Some of it made you fall over laughing.  It was incredibly hard to pick just 12 winners. 

 And yes, they can be produced.  We did find actors that can switch from low comedy to high drama.  And through creative means, the festival organizers were able to drum up funds to purchase set pieces, properties and costumes.  Because these plays are important and deserve a few bucks to tell the story right.
